My new favorite Mexican place! It has authentic Mexican food - way better than el maguey , chimis, three amigos etc. try the tacos nortenga - deliiishhhh! They closed at ten and we got there at 915 but they weren't crabby at all and the food came out quickly. It was so delicious we scarfed it down in twenty minutes so everyone was happy! I had heard about this place from numerous people and it didn't disappoint

If I had read Aimee K's review I probably would have declined the lunch invitation... I didn't, and ended up here for lunch with a group from work. This is a favorite of people I work with, so I went in with a good attitude. I had the lunch special chicken enchiladas mole, which came with rice and beans. The rice and beans were typical Mexican restaurant rice and beans - not bad, but not really good either. The enchiladas were really tasty though - the chicken was well cooked and the mole sauce was yummy. Service was what I would have expected - very attentive but with a language barrier. Overall, I would do lunch here again because they had some interesting offerings that were more than your typical order-by-number Mexican. Also, I was out the door for less than $10 including tip.

Have not been here in about 3 years. Wow has it changed for the better. The food was fantastic and the service was not only prompt and courteous, but it was personable also. I will not wait another three years to come back, but will probably be back within the next three weeks.

If your looking for authentic Southern Californian Mexican food don't eat here! If your from the Midwest and El Maguey is your idea of Mexican food this place will be great for you. As an ex Southern California girl this was 1 rating above Taco Bell and that's only because they serve margaritas. I've heard the Margaritas here are very good but I was unable to partake. If your looking for the most unfriendly hostess to seat you-you'll find her here, despite our hellos and thank you's and can we get a high chair not one word uttered from her mouth. Food was bland everything needed salt including the salsa that my 2 year old called tomatoes. The taco and tostada shell were bought at Shnucks! No Aguas frescas here! The best thing on this menu was the Corona!

yum! some of the best nachos next to Lacaretta!

No Taco Salads? They use hamburger instead of beef. It's okay, but my least favorite Mexican place.

Found my South Texas Mexican food in St. Louis! Mole was great. Pleasantly surprised by the sweet potato chips. Can't wait to go back and try the other dishes they offer! Request? Barbacoa!

Great food! Amazing margaritas! Great service! Great prices! Pitcher of top shelf Margherita for only $25! Will definitely be back! :)

Have eaten here many times. Service is good. We love the sweet potato chips. Most foods we've tried is great. Always be back.

This is our go-to Mexican place, primarily because it's within stumble-home distance. I'm not sure if they've changed ownership lately but a few things have changed. Their margaritas are different (not as potent, and they taste...different, can't put my finger on it), their salsa has changed, but I view that one as an improvement. I usually get the supreme chimi, because it comes with some good ass grilled peppers and onions, which totally make the dish. I'm also a fan of their burritos. They have great cheese dip too. They offer free chips n salsa upon sitting down, and they get points for something different - in addition to regular tortilla chips, they also have sweet potato "chips", which is a nice change of pace. I usually base a Mexican joint on their margaritas, chips n salsa, guacamole, and chimichangas. This place is pretty solid in all categories. MOST of the time service is great. There is one guy in particular I do not care for because I can never understand him, he mumbles all the time and speaks fast, on top of the language barrier. He also forgets about tables constantly...so we have to flag him down all the time. Other than him, service is great. Great food, great margaritas, and, for me, great location. 4 stars. Boom.

This is a very good restaurant. The fajitas are very good and the margaritas are just what you need after a long day working out of town. Highly recommended.

Great food. They do a great job in adjusting the children's meals to my kids liking. The margaritas are sooo good. Yum!

It has been years since we have been here due to the restaurant and staff being inconsistent. Decided to give it a try tonight since it is close to home. Wow has it changed! The server was great! Super friendly and made a great suggestion. The food was AMAZING! The taco nortenos had great flavor and way more then I could ever eat at one time. My husband had the Al Pastor Tacos, what a great combination with the pork and pineapple. We will definitely be back!

I have been here a few times and my major complaint (hence the three stars) is the service. Last time it took 20 minutes or so to get an initial water... Even longer before a drink was in my hand. Not exactly optimal. Getting my order taken? Even worse. We were there maybe an hour (sat immediately) before we even ordered good. My food (I got their nachos) was REALLY good (well, the chicken half was - not the beef half)... But I know some other people In my group were not as happy. Getting my check was easier than a drink or food.. But getting my debit card back? Another feat... Not impressed.

We eat here at least once a week. We love the tacos nortenos and Juarez shrimp Fajitas. Guacamole is wonderful too! It's a small treasure for the Maryland Heights area! Half Picher of Margaritas for $6 on Wednesday nights! Never disappoints!

  • Leslie S.

In the past, I've only been here for lunch and absolutely love the mini chimi's on their combo meal! However, when I came for dinner, none of their combo meals had the chimi. So I opted to get a regular size chimi instead, figuring they'd be just as good. For me, it wasn't as tasty as their lunch version, and maybe it's because I ordered the supreme chimi, which came with a lot more toppings/fillings than I wanted. If they have other chimis, I didn't see them on the menu though. Their chips and salsa and cheese dip rock! I'll still be back, definitely for lunch and maybe for something different for dinner.

Chihuahua's is one of my favorite restaurants in St. Louis! Fresh, hot, tasty food, with great consistent service, and a nice clean environment. Sweet tea, cheese dip, and anything with grilled chicken is the best! I see a few negative feed backs, and I had one not so great experience here once before. Keep in mind, I eat her several times a month! I notified a different waitress and she had our food out and drinks refilled in 5 minutes. This is a family owned business, very very nice people and employees. If you have an issue, they will fix it immediately. LOVE LOVE LOVE CHIHUAHUAS! :)

I count that I have eaten here ten times now. It is close to my former co-workers and is a good place for Mexican lunch. I stand by my 3-1/2 star rating and have rounded down in the past, but since I keep going back, I will round up this time. They do a very good job with huevos con chorizo, the tacos al pastor are decent and tacos de carne asada are good. Lately I have been ordering carnitas and taking at least half home. The serving is large and the meat is tender and juicy, served covered with grilled onions. My latest server explained to my lunch partner that flour tortillas are the default, but they are happy to provide corn tortillas if you ask. They will make chiles torreados for a small charge and my last serving was three large chiles. My buddy had good looking grilled chicken breast topped with chorizo and cheese. Chihuahua's is a full menu typical family Mexican restaurant, better than average, nothing remarkable or surprising. It is not a taqueria. I like that they participate in AAdvantage dining and will remain a 3-4 times per year lunch place for us. There are still a lot of things on the menu that I should try, but I keep getting carnitas and huevos con chorizo.

I always get the chimi supreme with steak. Nachos are good too. The prices are a bit steep now but its still worth it! Margaritas are spot on!

Came to Maryland Heights for a work trip and found this little place and it is wonderful!! Our waiter was very friendly and actually got me to try something new! The food has wonderful spice and seems very authentic, not one item I ate was bland. I'm already planning a trip to come back with my boyfriend, who loves Hispanic food!

Update: I still really enjoy this place. Comfortable for a single to go sit at the bar to eat and have a cocktail (Sangria). Attentive, but not smothering, staff. Delicious, basic Latin chow. My DIL is Latin and coming in for Christmas. I ordered some traditional tamales for holiday dinner. I'll let you know how that goes.

    (4)
  • Mark S.

The two things I rate Mexican restaurants on are their chips and salsa and their tamales! Their pork tamales come smothered (but not swimming) in sauce, ground beef, and cheese. They are brimming with well seasoned pork to give a good meat to masa ratio. The salsa is fresh and delicious with roasted jalapeños. Chips are aight.

This is a small mexican owned/operated restaurant in Maryland Heights MO. I really love their food and the people are super nice, prices are good and servings are more than generous. If you like mexican food you can't go wrong with Chihuahua's! I go at lunch so I've never sampled from the bar ;)

  • Amy W.

My husband and I as well as co-workers have been here countless times for lunch and dinner. We've never had anything but fast, friendly service and I like their food better than most other Mexican restaurants in the area.

  • Nevin M.

Man oh man. The servers were cordial, and they seemed a bit over-attentive. The food arrived promptly. I love me some Mexican food. A buddy of mine and I decided to get a combination platter featuring four or five different types of meat. The meal cost about 35 but we were filled to the brim. We finished about 3/4 of the meal. It didn't help that we loaded up on the free chips and salsa, which was excellent. It may have been the first time I went into a food coma while I was eating. My only complaint is that the place is not very comfortable. It is fairly crowded in the restaurant so that may cause a problem to some. However, the quality of the food they serve trumps any minor gripe I have with the spatial arrangement of the restaurant.

  • Danielle D.

We only go here for the chicken fajitas, they are amazing! The margaritas taste a bit like mix, not authentic. But will always return when in the mood for fajitas. For margaritas or any other mexican food we always for to la carreta off hwy 94 in St. Peter's... The best margaritas in town and super friendly!!

We visited Chihuahua's Mexican grill a few nights back to start our quest for good Mexican food in St Louis. Mexican food varies by region in our country as well as region in Mexico, so it all boils down to personal taste. Overall we liked the restaurant. Attentive servers with lovely accents, not overly noisy, sports on the tv. The food was good & OK. Margaritas arrived quickly, but were too sweet for us, so our answer to 'too sweet' is to order an extra shot of tequila to add to the drink. Hubby had shrimp diablo, which from the description we thought it would have some fresh red peppers, but it was just some shrimp on a bed of rice with side salad. (Google images for this dish vary greatly, but based on this research and our impression, this was a below average dish for us.) I had Pollo Norteno tacos and I really liked them. Traditional street tacos of chorizo sautéed chicken. I love cilantro - next time I'll order extra. The location is a little far from our house, but was the perfect stop on the way home from the airport. We'll probably visit again.

Good, local and authentic mexican food! Come here for lunch often. Cheap and tasty when I have cravings for rice, beans and chimichangas.

  • Jimmy R.

Ok, so I have an open mind. I came back a few times. This time I ordered the Carne Asada tacos. Tastes much better. They have to work on the consistency. Sometimes they really got the tacos right just like when I lived in Mexico! However, why serve that nasty refried beans in aluminum lined paper bowl? So horrible..and the cheese sprinkled on top doesn't make it pretty. I get the taco dish but sure wish they could leave out the extra refried beans and at a lower price.

Ok service is an issue here. But the food is not an issue another great meal. Today they took every table they had and made a huge long table for a group that came in. I knew once the group hit we would be in trouble and we were. They may be a victim of their own success.

I ordered 2 ground beef tacos, & my bf ordered a burrito of some sort. The taco shells tasted a bit old, & my bf said that the tortilla tasted old as well. The chips were fresh, & the salsa was good. Service was fast, and the staff were very attentive. The price wasn't too bad.

Came here to try something new on a day I was running errands by myself. Upon entering I was seated immediately at the farthest table in the back. It was the start of the lunch hour, so I was ok with that. However, it was just me and they sat me at a booth for 6, which was a little uncomfortable. Table for one, not six, please. Service was pretty slow, and sadly, I think I had a new waiter, because he did not know anything about the menu. He kept having to leave to check with someone anytime I asked a question about an item or a drink. I ordered a lunch special that I do not recall the name of, but it was $5.99. It consisted of chicken covered in melted white cheese and chorizo. It came with a side of shredded lettuce topped with a dollop of sour cream and a couple of tomato chunks. It also came with a tiny side of rice and three flour tortillas. The chicken was tasty, albeit a little greasy (but that is what chorizo tends to do). I did not eat the tortillas with it, but the lettuce, tomatoes and sour cream made a nice accompaniment. The rice was bad. I had to salt it and mix it with cheese sauce to give it flavor. I was hungry, so I ate it anyway after I doctored it up. I also ordered a margarita on the rocks. Their Cinco de Mayo specials were starting and margs were $4.99 for a 16 oz "glass" (plastic cup) with salt and a lime wedge. If I am dining it, the least they could have done is give me a glass. No water was ever brought to the table, but chips and salsa was brought immediately upon seating. Salsa had a nice kick, but the chips lacked salt. It took forever to get the check and the place was not packed even though lunch was in full swing by now. Glad I tried something new, but I will not be dining her again.

I live just around the corner but still managed to only go here once in the last 4 years. Then they started the instant Groupon thing and Chihuahua's popped up. $10 for $20 of food? Today? Right on! So off I went, phone in hand to spend $20. Pancho Villa Fajitas, a burrito, queso and one diet coke later we'd done that and more. The food was good.. not great.. not anything to write home about. If you like El Maguey, you'll like this place. The service was good, right up until we got our food. Then it was like we didn't exist. Waited forever for our check, waited even longer for a box for my leftovers and pretty much just gave up and went up front to pay. I do recommend the fajitas, they had steak, chicken, chorizo and shrimp.. a huge portion, served on a plate with a burner underneath to keep it warm. Of course, the waitress forgot my tortillas and then never came back to check on me - but lucky for her I don't use them anyway!

Doesn't seem like they advertise their specials. On Tuesdays they have half price Margaritas, and also all you can eat tacos (beef or ckn, hard or soft) for $6.99

Was not at all impressed. Walked in and ordered to-go.... explained how we wanted a burrito about 3 times and of course it didn't come that way. Other dishes were very bland.

This is a pretty good place! When we moved to Maryland Heights from Webster Groves, I had to bid farewell to my beloved El Maguey (on Chippewa). I was intent on finding a place with good Mexican food and a giant margarita. I think I may have found it with Chihuahua's. Don't get me wrong, nothing will ever replace my love for El Maguey, but this is a good rebound restaurant. Now the food here is actually better than El Maguey. It feels a little more fresher than what I'm used to, and they didn't resort to the sway of Provel and Marinara. Good, solid food. The margarita didn't let me down either. It was a lovely size, and made me smile a bit. The restaurant was clean and organized well. Our service was good, and there seemed to be a good manager running the place. Overall, my first visit here was good, and I look forward to seeing how it treats me in the end.

I've been to this place twice for lunch. The quality of food is nothing special - not authentic Mexican, just your run-of-the-mill midwestern version, so don't come here looking for a culinary revelation. Chips and salsa are fresh and tasty. The guacamole is acutally quite good. I had their Pollo Michuacan (not sure about the spelling) and Chicken Enchiladas Rancheros. Both were decent. So why the 4 stars? Two reasons: the service was extremely friendly and speedy, plus they have a $5.50 lunch special that includes both your ordinary combinations as well as a couple of slightly more creative chicken dishes. For being so convenient to 270, this is a nice little lunch spot. It hasn't caught on (you'll barely notice it from the street), so the crowds are low. The two times I went, there were open tables throughout the lunch hour.

Steak is usually one of those can't screw up things at a Mexican place... sure it'll likely be well done but it'll be tasty. I was in a serious mood for a charred steak and wouldn't mind it if it were ridiculously marinated. It wasn't. It was bland... and not charred at all. The lovely wife also got a steak with cheese on it. That didn't make it better.

I love this place! The food is fantastic and very reasonably priced. Great homemade chips and excellent margaritas! One of my favorite places to eat.

  • Lisa S.

Delicious! Fast service and very attentive. Real Mexican food and very fresh. Not overly spicy or bland. I used to be a huge El Maguey fan, but for the past two years this place has them beat hands down. I have tried multiple items and have liked everything. Prices are very reasonable as well.

  • Maureen M.

Drinks were good, food was meh. I've had better and order directly off the menu because if you need to change anything you will confuse the waiter (language barrier) but for a small local place it's not bad, I have just had better.

    (2)
  • Bryan S.

The Good: The green salsa that came with the steak was great. The food came so quickly after we ordered it that I was amazed. The number of selections for the $5 kids meal were better than at just about any Mexican joint I've been to. The Bad: The pico de gallo had been made *many* hours before, possibly more than a day. The guac wasn't very good. They went very heavy on the onions, not only with my son's fajitas, but my steak too. The chips were pretty obviously from a bag. The steak was the standard, over-salted, braised for hours and hours thing that it so often is in this type of place. The Ugly: The salsa that they brought out with the chips was hardly distinguishable from canned crushed tomatoes. They never refilled our water or soda glasses. Everyone in our party was disappointed. I rounded up from 1-1/2 stars because I reserve 1 star for the El Maguey/El Nopal/El Indio joints. Another poster wrote that, "the food here is actually better than" his "beloved El Maguey." I agree, but if you don't actually *like* El Maguey, avoid Chihuahua's.

So, the name definitely threw me off a bit at first. I mean, it's not the most appealing name! Despite this, I was pretty impressed with the food. It's not super greasy like food at other Mexican restaurants. Now don't me wrong, I'm not opposed to a little greasy food now and again...but sometimes it's nice when your food is not dripping in it. I recommend the chicken chimichanga meal. You get a ton of food for your money; but, of course you can always fill up on the chips and salsa. The décor is also cute, too. It sort of has that "outside" look that a lot of similar places have. It's probably not the absolute best Mexican food that you will have in your life, but it beats going to a chain like Chevy's.

    (4)
  • Benton S.

The prices were slightly higher than I would have liked from a strip-mall mexican joint. My dining companion enjoyed the titular chihuahua chimichanga filled with some very fat looking shrimp. I had the chuletas which were cooked adequately but was also reminiscent of those fat looking shrimp. The guacamole was adequately if not excitingly prepared and justified its higher menu price with quantity. Service was very fast and pleasant.

Just moved to Maryland Heights from Arizona and we can say that this is even better than some of the places we've been to out west. We try out new mexican places/ salsa whenever we get the chance. The first week we lived here we went to Chiuahuas atleast 3 times. I can safely say we are regulars. Service is super fast & friendly and the food is outstanding. Most lunch dishes are 5.50 and the portions are still large. Occasionally I"ll stop by to pick up some salsa to have around the house. So happy we found this place!

    (5)
  • Carol S.

The food is very bland, they need to spice it up a bit! My food, chicken enchilada's, was not even close to being hot. There was a hint of a red sauce on the tortilla's, a very chintzy sprinkle of cheese, and the chicken was flavorless. The atmosphere was fun, with the mariachi strolling band of 3 musicians. Won't go back.

The best queso fundido you will ever have...period! Order it for your ap, entree and dessert. It's incredible!!!

  • Jeffrey Z.

I believe a great Mexican food establishment can be judged on their fajitas. If you don't have good fajitas, not good. This place, great drink specials, the chips and salsa was promising, I was getting excited, then the fajitas arrived. Flavor was good. The bacon wrapped shrimp was good with respect to flavor, but I'm not certain when they cooked it. Seemed pre-cooked and warmed. The steak and chicken was extremely dry in the midst of the soggy vegetables. Steak was chewy, chicken was so dry I went through two glasses of water. Beans and rice were standard. I won't return because the food was average. If you're looking for cheap Mexican food this place may be for you. I don't really care about the cost as long as its good, the service was poor. I ran out of tortillas (only got three?) and no one cared to offer me more. I only saw my waitress twice, once when I sat to order and once when I paid. I don't recommend this place, sorry. Not sure what the buzz was about, if it wasn't for the chips and salsa, this place would have received two stars.

    (3)
  • Ryan H.

I've been here twice. First time I'd give it 4 stars but this time was a 2.5. Good staff, they take your order on a tablet. Salsa is pretty good but if you don't like spice then you should stay away from it. The main thing I noticed between both visits was the time of day. Lunch time was our last visit and there were more people than our first visit which was around 4 pm. According to a sign in the front window they are building a new location which looked pretty cool.

Ok I'm a nice person but how do I report a bug. In the bathroom. Running towards me. Hesitating. Turning around. Is it a cricket? Ok I'm ok with crickets. Is it s cockroach? Ewwww. Thx for dinner guys. Great chips.

This place isn't bad and I actually like their food. I really like the sweet chips. The food is fairly authentic and the margaritas are great I usually go ahead go to happy hour and try a few things but my favorite is there a grilled chicken fajitas which are full of flavor and are good portion. Their fried cheesecake is also amazing but it is a diet buster! Sometimes it's worth it. The staff is very friendly and the service is quick. This is one of the most authentic Mexican restaurants I have been to in St. Louis.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
